Austria has a long-standing tradition of contributing to international peacekeeping, diplomatic engagement, civilian crisis management, humanitarian aid and development co-operation. 

The underlying security policy orientation is determined by the Austrian Security Strategy. 

Given Austria’s geographic position, its cultural and political ties, and its traditional, internationally recognised active approach to foreign and security policy, Austria avails itself of special opportunities to shape internal and external security, both bilaterally and within the framework of international organisations. Moreover, it collaborates with regional partners and other stakeholders where appropriate, as security policy action can only be effective through joint action with suitable partners.

In the field of SALW and SCA control, Austria has invested significant knowledge, funding and human resources in actively contributing to the promotion of international arms control norms, principles, and standards. Within the OSCE, Austria is a strong supporter of the SALW and SCA commitments and the assistance mechanism.
